Two German-Russian men have been arrested in Germany on suspicion espionageone of them accused of agreeing to carry out attacks against potential targetsincluding US military installations, hopefully sabotage aid to Ukraine prosecutors said Thursday.
Both were identified only as Dieter S. and Alexander J. in accordance with German privacy rules, kept in the Bavarian city of Bayreuth, said federal prosecutors.
Dieter S. had been discussing possible acts of sabotage in Germany with someone since October linked to Russian intelligence serviceswith the main objective of undermining Germany’s military support for Ukraine.
The suspect declared that he was willing to carry out attacks with explosives and arson against the infrastructure used by the army and industrial centers in Germany, according to the prosecutor’s office in a statement. Information was collected on potential targetsincluding US military installations, they added.
Alexander J. allegedly helped him do that starting in March, and Dieter S. inspected some of the locations, took photos and videos of military equipment, and passed the information on to his intelligence contact .
