Georgia Judge Rejects Republican Lawsuit to Block Weekend Ballot Return

Atlanta (AP) – A Georgia judge on Saturday rejected a Republican lawsuit seeking to prevent counties from opening election offices over the weekend to allow voters to hand in their mail ballots in person.

Reasons for the Ruling

Judge Kevin Farmer of Fulton County Superior Court ruled that voters are indeed allowed to hand-return their absentee ballots according to state law. The lawsuit, filed late Friday and naming Fulton County, argued that the ballots cannot be accepted due to a section of Georgia law saying ballot drop boxes cannot be open after advance voting ended on Friday. However, state law allows for ballots to be delivered in person until 7 p.m. on Election Day.

Alex Kaufman’s Delays Arguments

The lawsuit was brought forth by Alex Kaufman, who initially argued that voters aren’t allowed to hand-deliver ballots between the end of early in-person voting and the beginning of Election Day. This included Friday to Tuesday, a period during which the law allows ballots to arrive via mail. Judge Farmer repeatedly dismissed these arguments and orally ruled against Kaufman.

Election Office Practices and Transparency

State GOP chairman Josh McKoon and other Republicans accused counties controlled by Democrats of "illegally accepting ballots." There was online traction among Republicans as Fulton County election officials initially stated observers wouldn’t be allowed inside election offices. This statement led to confusion, but Fulton County elections director Nadine Williams later clarified that public observation is permissible without credentials.

Judge’s Verdict and Continuing Efforts

Judge Kevin Farmer reaffirmed that Fulton County and other participating counties can accept hand-delivered absentee ballots. As of Saturday evening, 105 ballots had been received at Fulton County’s locations. This highlights the importance of maintaining transparency and clarity in election practices.

Final Thoughts and Call to Action

The ruling by Judge Farmer settles one major lawsuit but underscores the continuous controversy surrounding election processes in Georgia, especially due to years of false claims blaming Democratic-leaning counties for election irregularities. Voters are urged to be informed and proactive in following election guidelines and ensuring their ballots are counted.
