Reimagining patient Care: the “Kind Medicine” Project

In a meaningful step towards patient-centered care,the hospitals of Varese and Luino are pioneering a new project focused on humanizing care.This initiative, a collaborative effort between the Ospedalieri Volunteer Association (AVO) and Fadoi (federation of Internist Hospital Managers), aims to infuse hospital wards with empathy, quality interactions, and dedicated support for healthcare volunteering.

Spearheaded by 1 Coffee ONLUS, an organization founded by Luca argentero, Beniamino Savio, and Pietro Mazza midana, in partnership with Fadoi, the “Kind Medicine that Cares and Listens” project seeks to address the critical need for compassionate care within the healthcare system. This initiative comes at a time when studies show that patient satisfaction is directly linked to the quality of interaction and emotional support received during hospital stays. According to a 2024 report by the national Institute for Healthcare Management, hospitals with strong volunteer programs and patient-centered initiatives report a 15% higher patient satisfaction rate.

AVO Takes the Lead: Implementing Non-Pharmacological Therapies

AVO Varese is at the forefront of implementing this vision within the Medicine departments of Varese and Luino, under the direction of Dr. Tiziana Attardo. The core of their work involves a specialized program targeting the non-pharmacological treatment of delirium in the elderly. This innovative approach, conducted in partnership with the Medical Area Department of ASST Sette Laghi, emphasizes activities that foster listening, companionship, and relational engagement.

The program incorporates therapies such as Doll Therapy and employment therapy, which have shown promise in reducing anxiety and improving cognitive function in elderly patients experiencing delirium. Doll therapy, for example, provides a sense of comfort and security, while employment therapy engages patients in meaningful activities that promote mental stimulation and a sense of purpose. These methods align with a growing trend in geriatric care that prioritizes holistic well-being over solely relying on medication.

Expanding Reach and Impact

Currently, the program is operational on 156 beds and aims to reach over 8,000 patients per year. Plans are in place to gradually extend the program to other ASST structures, amplifying its positive impact on patient care throughout the region. This expansion reflects a commitment to making compassionate care a standard practice across all healthcare facilities.

This local endeavor is part of a broader national project encompassing 20 hospitals across Italy. Its primary goal is to combat the isolation experienced by vulnerable patients and foster a more empathetic and inclusive healthcare environment.
