Geminids Meteor Shower: France Weekend Viewing Guide

Shooting star fans, a phenomenon called Geminids will occur on the night of Saturday December 13th to Sunday December 14th. This will be an opportunity to admire hundreds of shooting stars with the naked eye.

With, on average, 150 stars per hour, lovers of night and starry skies will be delighted during the night of Saturday December 13 to Sunday December 14, reports RTL. Perhaps most impressive is that the phenomenon will be visible to the naked eye. The meteor shower is called Geminids. If you have been paying attention, you may have noticed that the phenomenon has already been visible in the French sky since the beginning of December. However, its intensity varies depending on weather conditions.

According to the International Meteor Organization (IMO), this is the most intense meteor shower of the entire year. And, in France, the conditions look favorable for being able to enjoy the show. “Unlike 2024, the conditions are much more favorable since the Moon will be relatively discreet with 30% illumination and, above all, rising at 2:57 a.m.,” reports the Cité de l’Espace de Toulouse website.

How to make the most of it?

It is first recommended that enthusiasts escape the clouds and lights of big cities. In addition, to get used to the darkness of the night, the eyes need at least 10 minutes. They then perceive all the stars, and no telescope or special equipment is needed.

To admire the spectacle, the ideal place remains the seaside, a high point or an open field. In case of cloudy skies, shooting stars may be visible the nights before or after peak activity. However, the shooting stars will be fewer in number.
