Ally Wollaston Steals Tour of Britain Women Victory from Cat Ferguson in Final Stage

A dramatic final stage in Glasgow saw Ally Wollaston snatch the overall win at the Tour of Britain Women, leaving Cat Ferguson heartbroken.

The Tour of Britain Women concluded on Sunday with a nail-biting finish, as Ally Wollaston edged out Cat Ferguson in the final seconds. Ferguson, who had been hoping for a home victory, saw her dreams dashed by Wollaston’s late surge in Glasgow.

Ferguson, a 19-year-old Movistar rider, celebrated her first WorldTour win on Saturday and seized the race leader’s jersey. Her stage three triumph involved beating Josie Nelson (Team Picnic PostNL) and Wollaston (FDJ-Suez) in Kelso, resulting in a tie on time with Wollaston in the overall standings.

Ferguson had taken the led from Kristen Faulkner, the USA national road race champion, after Faulkner (EF Education-Oatly) suffered multiple crashes and finished over three minutes behind on Saturday.

On the final stage, Ferguson experienced a slow puncture, hindering her ability to compete effectively in the intermediate sprints. Wollaston capitalized, finishing second behind her in each of the three sprints, earning bonus seconds that leveled their times before the final showdown.

Despite Wollaston trailing with 3km remaining, her team propelled her to the front with about a kilometer to go. she surged ahead before the final corner, holding her position as Lorena Wiebes sprinted to the stage victory.

Wollaston finished the four-day WorldTour race four seconds ahead of Ferguson, with Karlijn Swinkels (UAE Team ADQ) taking third place.

“I am feeling very overwhelmed,” wollaston said, overcome with emotion after the race. “It is indeed so exciting and it really couldn’t have gone any better for me today.”

“I was lucky that there were a lot of seconds up for grabs. The plan was to get as many seconds as I could, and unfortunately Cat [Ferguson] was on my wheel for every single one, so it really came down to the last sprint.”

“I headed into the final sprint and I was in an okay position,” she said on Sunday. “But I got a bit chopped up on some corners before, and really that was it. Ally went away and I knew that was it. Of course I am gutted but she was the strongest today.”

“I am still happy with second place. If you had told me at the beginning of the week I would have been second, I would have been over the moon. So I can’t be too disappointed.”
