Gazelles Win: 54-33 vs. Pierre | Sports

The Gazelles opened strong in the first quarter to grab an early lead. Wolfgram recorded an uncontested seven-point run to propel the Gazelles to a 10-0 lead.

“I was just thinking, we got to get out, get a good start, and that’s all I wanted to do. Get a good lead for my team,” Wolfgram said.

With four minutes left in the quarter, Pierre recorded its first basket of the game thanks to a layup from Jordyn Kirkie.

Yankton continued to chip away to extend its lead. Nora Krajewski, Josslyn Elwood and Kudera all recorded baskets for the Gazelles in the first quarter.

“Really proud of how they executed and just kind of problem solved on the go together and did a great job,” Yankton head coach Blake Savey said.

The Governors battled in the second quarter. Emery Larson and Molly Olson recorded baskets for Pierre to shrink the deficit.

Yankton fought back to remain in the lead. The Gazelles rallied with an uncontested eight-point run to close the second quarter.

The Gazelles entered halftime leading 31-17 over the Governors.

“They just worked really hard together. They covered for each other,” Savey said. “I thought that help side was pretty good tonight, and that’s always kind of a sign of a team that’s working hard on defense.”

Yankton continued to push offensively and defensively to maintain a steady pace. The Gazelles found momentum once again to record an uncontested 12-point run, including three baskets from Wolfgram.

“I thought they did a great job playing within our identity and just doing what we do well,” Savey said. “I thought they ran the floor really well on offense, defended really well in the half court, and then had really good half-court defense as well… communicated a lot, and we had a lot of players step up in some big moments and make a lot of big plays.”

Yankton held Pierre to just five points in the third quarter to extend the lead.

Pierre fought hard in the fourth quarter to remain in contention. Olson scored eight points for the Governors to narrow the gap.

Despite efforts from Pierre, Yankton stayed in the lead to earn a 54-33 victory.

“I feel like there’s a little bit of rivalry between Pierre and Yankton, so the girls really wanted [the win] that bad, and we got it,” Wolfgram said.

With the win, Yankton improved to 4-8. The Gazelles host Sioux Falls Roosevelt on Thursday.

Pierre T.F. Riggs, 3-9, hosts Tea Area on Saturday.

Pierre won the JV game, 37-29. For the Gazelles, Burkley Olson finished with 10 points. Isabelle Sheldon totaled nine points and four rebounds.

Yankton won the ‘C’ game, 40-23. For the Gazelles, Jadi Kindle recorded 12 points, three steals and three blocks. Isabelle Sheldon tallied 11 points. Savannah Becker totaled seven rebounds.
