Dublin’s Gateway Integration Centre: Embracing Diversity Through Community and Sports
In Dublin, a beacon of hope and integration stands where once stood barriers of fear and prejudice. The Gateway Integration Centre in East Wall, which faced intense anti-immigration protests two years ago, now thrives as a testament to community resilience and the power of human kindness.
A Community Embraces Change
Today, 450 individuals—families, couples, and singles—call the Gateway Integration Centre home. The center’s mission is to empower these residents, offering them a supportive environment to build new lives and contribute to the community.
Janeth Justiniano, one of the center’s first residents, recalls the initial fears brought on by the protests. However, with the unwavering support of staff and a strong security presence, she and her fellow residents found solace in their new surroundings.
“There was a lot of fear amongst residents, but the security and staff at the center kept calm, reassuring us that we would be safe,” said Justiniano.
Redefining the Space
After four months of operation, Sinéad Fennelly took the helm as manager. Her primary goal was to renovate and improve the facility, setting a tone of calm and reassurance. Today, the ground floor of the center is a hub of activities designed to enrich the lives of its residents.
Spaces like the English language classroom, playroom, training barber shop, training nail salon, HSE cubicle, post office, and administration rooms are testament to the center’s commitment to holistic development.
A Journey of Empowerment
Janeth Justiniano’s story embodies the transformative power of the Gateway Integration Centre. Initially isolated and living in heightened anxiety, she has since found her footing and purpose.
“I learned to knit, crochet and sew, and now I’m teaching my new skills to others who arrive at the center,” she said. “I want to help the people who maybe like me, come here with problems. I want to help them.”

The Role of Sports in Integration
Team-building activities, particularly sports, have played a pivotal role in creating a cohesive and inclusive community. Jonathan Dowling of Belvedere Youth Club, where many teenagers find new purpose, spoke of football as more than just a sport.
“Football is a mobilization tool creating harmony. Everyone has the same unified purpose to beat the opposing team,” he said.
Community Support and Overcoming Challenges
According to Dowling, the initial protests were fueled by outside influences that divided the community. However, the strong bonds built by the center and the commitment of the East Wall community have overcome these barriers.
“The people of the north inner city have a wealth of knowledge and are well educated and highly clued in and very accepting,” Dowling added.

Managing Expectations
Sinéad Fennelly, manager of the Gateway Integration Centre, praised the support received from the community. She acknowledged initial concerns but emphasized the overwhelming backing from local groups and organizations.
“There was more support than there was not. All in all, there were great groups around us from the beginning, and they could see what we were doing in the center, the investment we put into the center,” Fennelly noted.
A Future of Hope
For Janeth Justiniano, the Gateway Integration Centre has offered far more than she could have imagined on her arrival in East Wall. Now an advocate for knitting as a means of keeping depression at bay, she expressed gratitude to the Irish people for their kindness and friendship.
Justiniano is currently creating 30 Bolivian Dresses for St. Patrick’s Day. She plans to attend the celebrations with a ballet group she established at the center.
This remarkable story from Dublin’s East Wall highlights the importance of community support, the power of sports, and the transformative impact of places like the Gateway Integration Centre. It serves as an inspiring reminder of humanity’s capacity for kindness and unity, even in the face of challenges.
