Criminal Feuds Reach School Grounds: The Garda’s Role in Child Safety
In an alarming development, criminal feuds are so intense that threats have extended to young children on opposing sides. Parents have been forced to wear bulletproof vests while dropping off and picking up their children from school, a stark reality of the escalating violence.
Garda Síochána Addresses the Threats
Deputy Commissioner Justin Kelly of the Garda Síochána highlighted the severity of the situation. “Though these cases are rare, they are very serious and one of the reasons why we maintain intelligence files, specifically on some very young children,” he said.
Organized criminal groups:
The groups engage in intimidation, and in extreme cases, young children are caught in the middle. Kelly explained that there have been occurrences where different groups threaten various forms of harm to children on the opposing side.
Such threats are serious enough for the Garda to create an intelligence report and maintain it on their Pulse computerized database. Kelly emphasized that such records follow the child for life.
The Scope and Severity of the Issue
Previous Garda Inspectorate reports indicate that intelligence files can be created for children as young as a few days old or less than a year. However, this is not a common practice due to the serious implications.
Garda Commissioner Drew Harris further elaborated on the context of such threats. He explained that they stem from “simmering feuds” across Dublin and other parts of the country. The tensions often come to a head in the form of serious assaults, attacks on homes, and occasionally direct threats to children.
Harris acknowledged the serious nature of the issue, stating it is a factor in a very small number of cases. Nevertheless, the Garda Síochána collaborates closely with schools to keep all children, including those in designated risky categories, safe.
The Garda’s Commitment to Investigate
In light of these alarming developments, the Garda has decided to follow up with the appropriate authorities regarding intelligence files on young children. They have also committed to offering a more thorough explanation of the circumstances.
The Garda’s Pulse database has proved instrumental in their ability to act swiftly in protecting children. However, the maintenance of such files raises questions about the long-term impact on these children’s lives.
A Call to Action: How Can We Address the Issue?
The threats to schoolchildren cut to the core of community safety and require a concerted effort from all stakeholders. While the Garda Síochána plays a critical role in maintaining order and protecting children, addressing the root causes of such feuds must also be a priority.
We must work together to reduce criminal activity and ensure that our children can attend school without fear. Programs aimed at reconciliation, conflict resolution, and education can contribute significantly to fostering a peaceful community environment.
