A Solemn Commemoration

Gapyeong-gun served as the location for a memorial ceremony held on April 24th, honoring the veterans who fought and fell during the pivotal Battle of Gapyeong in the Korean War. The event took place at the Commonwealth Veterans Monument, a site dedicated to remembering their bravery and sacrifice.

The ceremony was a collaborative effort, co-hosted by the embassies of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New zealand in South Korea, alongside the South Korean Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs. Gapyeong-gun and the Army’s 66th Infantry Division provided additional support. The event drew approximately 100 attendees,including dignitaries such as Seo,the Mayor of Gapyeong-gun,ambassadors from the participating nations,Deputy Commander Derek McMolli,Deputy Minister of National Veterans Affairs Lee Hee-wan,Gyeonggi-do Governor kim Sung-jung,and Kang Tae-gu,commander of the 66th Division.

Honoring Valor and Sacrifice

The hour-long ceremony included a UN Memorial tribute, memorial readings, a memorial worship service, and the laying of wreaths. The atmosphere was somber, allowing participants to reflect deeply on the courage and selflessness displayed by the veterans during the intense conflict.

Individual Tributes to Fallen Heroes

Following the main ceremony, representatives from each nation proceeded to designated memorial sites representing Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. There, they conducted individual memorial services to specifically honor their respective veterans who participated in the Battle of Gapyeong.

The Battle of Gapyeong: A Turning Point

The Battle of Gapyeong, fought between April 23rd and 25th, 1951, saw United Nations forces, including troops from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New zealand, fiercely defend their positions against a large-scale Chinese spring offensive. Their accomplished defense of the Gapyeong area is widely considered a crucial turning point in the Korean War. The Allied forces,though outnumbered,managed to hold their ground,preventing a further advance by the Chinese forces and ultimately contributing to the stabilization of the front lines.
