Galway Renters Face Crisis as Costs Surge

Tenants in Galway are struggling with soaring rental prices, prompting investigations and forcing some to live in unconventional housing.

The rental market in Galway is becoming increasingly unaffordable, pushing residents to the brink as they struggle to find suitable and affordable housing. The Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) recently flagged “concerning trends” related to escalating rents in Galway, indicating a need for thorough examination.

The RTB plans to delve into the matter after observing two years of consistent rental inflation within Galway city. Over the past year, rental rates in Galway have jumped by 12.6%, positioning the average monthly rent at €2,304.

The Human Cost of Rising Rents

The picturesque streets of Galway belie a harsh reality for many who call it home. While tourists flock to experience the city’s charm, residents grapple with the financial strain of exorbitant rents.

The situation has become so critical that some individuals are turning to desperate measures to secure housing they can afford. “I’ve been living in a caravan for almost two years,” Jane windey said. “I’m really struggling to find anywhere that I can afford.”

Windey highlighted the stark contrast between rental costs in Galway and other European cities. “I’ve rented a full house in the center of Bruges for €650. You’re looking at a single room [in Galway] for €600 to €700 a month. That’s just not sustainable for me,” she said.

“If you work full-time on minimum wage your monthly income is less than the average wage. The situation is dire, and rents need to come down.”

Kathryn Reynolds, who returned to Galway from Spain five years ago, has experienced the rental surge firsthand. “When I came back in 2020, I was paying €800 [per month] and then I went to €600 when I was sharing with six other people,” she recounted. “Currently I pay €700 [per month] and that’s for a room in a shared house.”

Broader Impact on the Community

the scarcity of affordable rental options extends beyond Galway city. Sharon Goldie, residing in temporary accommodation in Loughrea with her son, shared her struggles. “For the last five years I have been living in temporary accommodation. We moved from Galway city because our landlord was selling the property we where in,” she said.

Goldie emphasized the emotional toll of unstable housing. “I think what people don’t understand is that being in temporary accommodation and going through what we’re going through, it really does affect your mental health. It changes you as a person.”

Don Colleran, an auctioneer in Eyre Square, noted that the rental crisis affects people of all ages. “We have a crisis at all ends.We have a crisis for first-time buyers, and we have a crisis for people who are now retiring and are finding it tough to find rented properties or properties to buy.”
