A New Home for Saintes’ Future Workforce
A cutting-edge residential complex is slated to replace the aging boarding school in Saintes, France, offering a notable upgrade in living conditions for apprentices and young workers. The project, situated on Rue de l’Ormeau-de-pied, will occupy the site currently housing the Actoria apprentice training centers (CFA Building and commerce), located west of the city.

Designed by the architectural firm of christophe Pillet, the four-story (R+3) building will span 5,000 square meters. The complex will feature 150 individual living units, ranging from 23 to 28 square meters, accommodating up to 240 residents.This includes approximately 210 work-study students and apprentices, as well as around 30 young professionals.

Addressing a Critical Housing Shortage
The development directly addresses the pressing need for improved housing options for young apprentices in the Saintes region.Secure and affordable housing is a crucial factor in attracting and retaining talent, ensuring the continued growth and success of local industries. According to recent studies,access to suitable accommodation is a major concern for apprentices across France,impacting their ability to focus on their training and career development.
Financial Backing and Collaborative Management
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the CFA Building, as joint landowners, are providing the land for the project. Sowing, a mixed real estate economy company of Saintonge, will hold the construction lease and ownership of the building during the lease period. The estimated construction cost is €14.2 million, with funding secured thru territories banking and housing action.
Operational management will be a collaborative effort between the housing complex and the CFAs, with an annual budget of approximately €800,000. An association will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the facility.
The city and the agglo are very favorable and carry the project. There is a major issue to improve the reception of young apprentices on our territory, by offering them a secure place.
