Barcelona had been negotiating a renewal with De Jong for months, but the talks have lasted longer than expected due to the Dutch international’s change of agent earlier this year.
Midfielder Frenkie de Jong’s previous contract was due to expire next summer, meaning he would have been able to listen to offers from other clubs in January had he not renewed his terms.
The Barça team is very clear that they do not want to enter this last year of the contract, so in the summer the movements intensify so that the Dutchman does not enter this last year of the contract with all that it entails.
The signing ceremony will take place in the presence of President Laporta, who personally supervised the negotiations to keep one of Barca’s most valuable assets at the club. Sports director Deco also praised the midfielder’s contribution, describing him as “a key player for the project” in a recent interview.
The Dutch midfielder will sign his renewal with FC Barcelona this Wednesday until 2029, in an event that will take place in the club’s commercial office and in which it will be announced that he will remain linked to the Barça team for a number of seasons yet to be confirmed.
The Dutchman was inclined to remain in Catalonia, but the negotiations failed due to the fault of his former representative. With the agent, the negotiation progressed and the agreement was closed, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.
Furthermore, in this new contract, the termination clause is set at 500 million, expanding the current one by 100 million, set at 400, for a top starter when he is at a high level and essential alongside Pedri.
Signed for 75 million euros from Ajax in 2019, De Jong is in his seventh season at Barça, where he has played more than 250 games under five different coaches. During that time, he has won six trophies, including two LaLiga titles.
