Strained Relations: France Weighs Options on OQTF Enforcement

The French Minister of the Interior, bruno Retailleau, has indicated that France may need to implement other measures regarding Algerian nationals subject to OQTF (Obligation to Leave French Territory) orders. This comes amid growing frustration over what Retailleau perceives as an insufficient balance of power with Algeria concerning the return of these individuals. The issue of deportations has become a meaningful point of contention in Franco-Algerian relations, especially in recent weeks.

Retailleau’s comments follow proposals from his rival for the leadership of Les Républicains (LR), Laurent wauquiez, who suggested sending hazardous foreigners under OQTF to Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, a French overseas territory. Retailleau initially dismissed Wauquiez’s idea as confusing but now appears to be signaling a more assertive stance on the matter.

It does not work well with Algeria. I think we have not installed a balance of power that is sufficiently significant.

While the specific measures under consideration remain undisclosed, the Minister’s remarks suggest a potential shift towards a more assertive approach in dealing with Algeria on immigration matters. This progress occurs against a backdrop of increasing pressure on European nations to manage migration flows effectively. Such as, Frontex, the European Border and Coast guard Agency, reported a 15% increase in irregular border crossings into the EU in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year.

Right-Wing Leadership Contest: meloni as a Model?

The debate over immigration policy is intertwined with the ongoing contest for leadership within the LR party. Laurent Wauquiez has explicitly cited Italian Prime minister Giorgia Meloni as a model for the right, praising her government’s actions on illegal immigration and economic recovery.

Wauquiez highlighted Meloni’s claimed success in reducing illegal immigration by 65% and her efforts to reduce Italy’s budget deficit. These claims, however, are subject to ongoing scrutiny and debate within Italy and the broader European Union. For instance, while some data suggests a decrease in initial arrivals, the overall number of asylum applications in Italy has remained relatively stable.

wauquiez has called for a broader coalition of right-wing forces, encompassing figures from Gérald Darmanin to Sarah Knafo, while excluding the Rassemblement National (RN), which he characterizes as having an extreme left economic platform.

Presidential Ambitions: A Looming showdown?

Even before the LR party members select their new leader, Laurent Wauquiez has already signaled his intention to compete for the party’s nomination for the next presidential election. In an interview, Wauquiez stated that he would support Bruno retailleau if Retailleau were deemed the best candidate, and expects the same support in return if he is chosen.

this declaration frames the current leadership contest not merely as a battle for control of the LR party, but as a preliminary skirmish in the larger struggle to determine the future direction of the French right and its prospects for regaining the presidency.
