Founder Mark Legge Launches The Solace: An Online Grief Support Platform

Mark Legge, a seasoned entrepreneur, has launched The Solace, an innovative online platform tailored to assist individuals navigating the complexities of grief. The Solace aims to go beyond traditional death notice services by offering a full suite of tools and resources for managing funeral arrangements, maintaining online memorials, and preserving cherished memories.

Comprehensive Services for All

For those in need, The Solace provides not only death notices but also tools for coordinating funerals, creating online memorials complete with photos, videos, and stories, and even managing RSVPs and charity donations. Its e-commerce store allows users to purchase sympathy cards, care packs, and urns, making it a one-stop shop for all funeral-related needs.

Competitive Positioning

Following RIP.ie’s decision to charge funeral directors €100 for placing death notices, Legge observed a surge in competitors within the industry. However, he distinguishes The Solace from these new entrants, asserting that it offers a far broader range of functionalities.

“They are so different to what we are doing,” Legge clarifies. “They predominantly serve as directories for funeral homes, providing little more than a location for obituaries. Grief, however, extends far beyond those initial days.”

In contrast, The Solace integrates comprehensive support for grief management, including the ability to RSVP, share videos, and download content, all accessible via one platform.

Foundation and Future

Legge’s entrepreneurial journey towards The Solace began with the loss of his father in 2019. He noted the difficulties of managing grief and the logistical challenges of funeral planning in the aftermath. Inspired by the emotional toll of these experiences, Legge identified a void in the market for innovative, supportive grief management resources.

Having founded and led &Open for five years, Legge decided to embark on this new venture around fourteen months ago. &Open, a platform he launched alongside his brother Jonathan and Ciara Flood in 2017, garnered significant investment, securing a Series A funding round worth $26 million (€25 million) in June 2022.

“Taking something small and creating something a little bit bigger” has always been Legge’s driving force. He is currently in talks with four of Ireland’s leading funeral directors as he refines and markets The Solace to Irish consumers.

International Expansion Plans

Building trust and establishing a presence in Ireland is Legge’s immediate focus. Planning for future growth includes exploring opportunities in the UK and US markets. Legge emphasizes the importance of understanding the nuances of different cultures and local practices to ensure The Solace remains a universally accessible and supportive service.

Membership Options

To ensure that its services remain accessible, The Solace offers a tiered membership structure. Users can sign up for a free membership, granting basic access to its resources. For €75, users can upgrade to a premium tier, unlocking additional functionality such as the ability to upload and download videos.

Funding and Future Aspirations

Up until now, Legge has funded The Solace personally, driving its development and growth through his own resources. Looking towards the future, he intends to seek external investment. Given his experience with fundraising for &Open, he is optimistic about raising a seed round that will further propel The Solace forward.

“It was super difficult,” he acknowledges, when reflecting on the decision to pivot from &Open to The Solace. “But I’m immensely passionate about the idea of The Solace and believe it has the potential to transform how we approach grief and funeral management.”

Call to Action

As discussions and developments within The Solace continue, the platform remains focused on creating a supportive, innovative environment for those facing grief. Whether through free memberships or premium tiers, The Solace stands committed to making critical grief resources accessible and user-friendly.

We invite you to explore The Solace, share your thoughts, and become a part of this transformative journey. Your feedback plays a vital role in shaping this platform into the go-to resource for grief management.
