What Is F1 Pre-Season Testing?

Teams receive three days at the Bahrain International Circuit to test their vehicles. Each day is divided into morning and afternoon sessions, totaling eight hours of track time. Typically, one car per team is allowed on the track at a time, with drivers sharing driving duties.

Teams can choose to allocate all sessions to one driver or split them between both. The goal is for each driver to log at least 12 hours behind the wheel over the three days.

During this testing phase, teams gather data on aerodynamics, tire performance, engine efficiency, fuel consumption, reliability, and handling. This information helps validate simulations and address any issues.

Testing also allows teams to compare their cars against the competition, ensuring they are competitive from the start of the season.

Why Do F1 Cars Use Flow-Vis Paint During Pre-Season Testing?

Flow vis is a mixture of fluorescent powder and light oil applied to certain areas of the car to visualize airflow. This technique helps teams analyze air dynamics, identify areas of turbulence, and prioritize areas for improvement.

Once the car returns to the garage, engineers photograph the painted surfaces and analyze the patterns to adjust setups like wing angles and bodywork features.

Former Ferrari and Williams engineer Rob Smedley explained, “You paint it liberally on the car, the car then goes out and as it’s moving up to speed and going through a cornering condition, the paint dries as the light oil evaporates, and you end up being able to visualize, very clearly, what sort of flow structures you’ve got.”

“When we then analyse that – we’re usually looking for things like separation, as in where the flow’s separating and we’re not getting decent flow structures across the surfaces of the car. That can then tell the aerodynamicists a lot about what’s going on upstream of that, and hopefully that helps them to rectify certain problems on the car.”
