Long-term work: ten years!
The ONF’s Forest Defense Against Fire (DFCI) teams are implementing a long process to revive the forest.
️ As soon as the fire ends, the damage assessment work begins in a public forest.
Objective ? Map the burned areas, assess the impact of the fire on the forest and on soil erosion, remove trees that risk falling to prevent any accident.
- 2 months after the fire, the collection of burned wood starts if the valorization of this wood is possible.
- 3 months after the fire, the forest remains under close surveillance.
Of the cutting and grinding vegetation can be carried out to prevent contamination of healthy trees by insect pests, which attack weakened trees.
- 1 to 3 years after the fire, the forest begins to regenerate naturally (partly) from his ashes.
If necessary, foresters help the natural dynamics by carrying out various works.
- 3 to 5 years after the fire, the plantations add to the natural dynamics.
The choice of species is made according to the environment and their resilience to climate change.
- 10 years after the fire, theforest atmosphere reappears.
It takes at least ten years for the forest to provide its services again – wood production, protection of biodiversity and public reception.
