Foreign Criminals: UK Punishment Loophole | Daily Mail

In Britain, thousands of foreign offenders, including rapists and drug dealers, have avoided trial thanks to apologies for their crimes, writes the Daily Mail.

Thousands of foreign criminals, including rapists, drug dealers and gangsters, have escaped punishment in Britain after apologizing for their actions, the Daily Mail reports, citing data from the country’s police departments.

The publication’s materials indicate that since 2021, such decisions have allowed more than 14 thousand foreigners to avoid court sentences, reports RIA “Novosti”.

The British “community settlement” system of apologies for minor offenses was originally introduced for teenagers and first-time offenders. However, the practice began to apply to people accused of serious crimes: over the course of three years, 2,900 sex offenders, including those against children, were kept out of court thanks to the scheme.

Among those who escaped trial are representatives of Albania, Congo, Iran, the Philippines, Hungary, Poland, Latvia, Romania, India, France, Lithuania, Pakistan, Nepal, Algeria, Syria, Nigeria and Zimbabwe. The Daily Mail notes that the exact number of foreign offenders may be significantly higher, since some police departments did not provide all the data on the nationality of the criminals.

Journalists emphasize that over the past three years, more than 412 thousand people in Britain have generally avoided prosecution, limiting themselves to only an apology. The newspaper quotes: “These figures highlight the absurd state of the British justice system.”

According to Britain’s Ministry of Justice, more than 100 criminals are wrongfully released each year. In 2024, 36.8 thousand illegal immigrants have already arrived in the country by boat across the English Channel, and the accommodation of asylum seekers costs the authorities several million pounds sterling per day.

As the newspaper VZGLYAD wrote, over the past 12 months, 262 prisoners were mistakenly released in Britain.

In November, a criminal wrongfully released from a London prison surrendered to authorities.

At the same time, over the year, Britain released 26 thousand prisoners early due to overcrowded prisons.
