Flu Season Hits New York: Experts Urge Vaccination Amid Record Holiday Travel

Influenza activity in New York state has surged, reaching "prevalent" levels with a 70% increase in cases in New York City alone over the past week. This concerning trend coincides with a predicted surge in holiday travel, raising concerns about the virus’s spread.

Flu Cases Surge Across the State

According to New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald, 23,313 positive flu cases have been reported across 60 counties as of December 14th. These figures highlight the rapid escalation of the flu season, prompting urgent calls for increased vaccination efforts.

Record Travel Fuels Concerns

Adding to the concern, 5.2 million passengers passed through JFK, Newark, LaGuardia, and Stewart airports during the recent 13-day period, along with 8.6 million vehicles crossing bridges and tunnels. The influx of travelers creates an ideal environment for the virus to spread quickly.

Vaccination is Key to Protection

Dr. McDonald strongly urges everyone 6 months and older to get vaccinated against the flu. Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect against infection and minimize the severity of symptoms if infected.

The flu can be particularly dangerous for:

  • Individuals 65 years and older
  • People with chronic medical conditions
  • Young children
  • Pregnant women

These groups are at higher risk of developing serious complications, including hospitalization or even death.
