Facebook data leak: How to get up to 600 euros back

Millions of Germans are affected – and now there is a chance for compensation: Because of a massive Facebook data leak, the Federal Association of Consumer Organizations (vzbv) is fighting in court for the rights of users. The class action lawsuit is ongoing – and you can register until the end of October 2025. This is reported by the portal ruhr24.de.

What happened in 2021?

Hackers stole personal information like phone numbers, Facebook names, email addresses and more in 2021. The information later appeared online – for sale. The consequences for many:

  • Nuisance calls
  • Phishing attempts
  • Worst case scenario: identity theft

Now the vzbv wants to establish that Facebook has violated data protection law with inadequate security measures.

Am I affected?

Anyone who had a Facebook account in 2018 or 2019 and provided their phone number there could be affected. A quick online test will show you whether your number appeared in the data leak.

How much money is there?

The Federal Court of Justice has already ruled: Loss of control over personal data alone can justify 100 euros in damages. Depending on the type of data stolen, the amount may increase:

  • Email, date of birth, place of residence: an additional 100 euros each
  • Relationship status: +200 euros

Maximum possible: up to 600 euros. Individual damages (e.g. due to fraud) can also be claimed – but not via the class action lawsuit.

This is how you join in

The lawsuit has been running before the Hamburg Higher Regional Court since October 10, 2025. Anyone who wants to take part must register in the lawsuit register at the Federal Office of Justice by the end of October at the latest. (dm)
