Top Recruit Zion Elee Stays Home, Commits to Maryland Terrapins

Baltimore native Zion Elee, ranked as the No. 1 recruit in the 2026 class by On3, has made a decision that’s sure to excite Maryland football fans. The five-star edge rusher has committed to playing for the Terrapins, choosing his in-state school over a host of high-profile programs.

Elee’s Commitment

Elee confirmed his commitment to Maryland, stating, “I think Maryland is a great school. What made me make the decision is the coaches. They’re really good people and I really connected with them on an outside level.”

The 2026 recruit was heavily recruited by programs across the country including Oregon, Penn State, Florida, Tennessee, Miami, and Texas A&M, demonstrating his exceptional talent. However, Elee ultimately decided to stay home, explaining, “I want to go somewhere and make that connection early. I always liked the environment. The coaches and visits were nice. I put everything aside and thought what do I actually want to do? I really thought about it and I wanted to stay home.”

Maryland Gains a Rising Star

Elee’s commitment marks a significant win for Maryland head coach Mike Locksley and his staff. Becoming commit number four in the 2026 cycle, Elee represents a promising addition to the Terrapins’ future.

The On3 Scouting Department draws comparisons between Elee and former first-round pick John Abraham, highlighting Elee’s ability as a speed rusher. Both athletes possess the athleticism and skillset to generate a pass rush from both two and three-point stances, suggesting a bright future for Elee in college football.

Elee’s commitment to Maryland is a major boost for the program and further establishes the Terrapins as a force to be reckoned with in the future.
