Support movement for Gaza: American Columbia University postpones campus evacuation

It ultimately won’t be this Friday. The American Columbia University has postponed the deadline for pro-Palestinian students to evacuate the campus, occupied to protest against the war in Gaza.

The office of the president of the New York university, where the movement started more than a week ago, returned to the deadline of midnight local time (i.e. 6 a.m. in France this Friday morning), set to dismantle a tent city where some 200 students had gathered.

“Negotiations have progressed and are continuing as planned,” said the office of university president Minouche Shafik in a statement released late Thursday evening. “We have our requests, they have theirs,” continues the presidential office, denying that police intervention was requested.

“They call us terrorists, they call us violent. But the only tool we have is our voices,” said one of the students present at the pro-Palestinian rally, introducing herself under the name Mimi.

A widespread movement

The pro-Palestinian American student movement started from Columbia University in New York. Dozens of arrests were made there last week after university officials used the police to put an end to an occupation accused by several figures of fueling anti-Semitism.

A Eurovision participant from Israel was banned from leaving the hotel. What is the reason?

Due to security reasons, she is also prohibited from attending competition events until the final, scheduled for May 11, Der Spiegel reports.

The Israeli secret service Shabak sent its agents to Malmö, Sweden, back in March to assess on the spot the conditions under which security would be provided for the Golan at Eurovision, and to determine what kind of security it would need. The number of security guards accompanying the singer has not been disclosed.

According to the newspaper, Swedish authorities are worried about possible incidents that could be provoked by pro-Palestinian activists. Malmö, the second largest city in Sweden, is traditionally home to many Palestinians.

The day before, May 3, a man and a woman burned a Koran outside the arena in Malmö and broadcast the event in real time on TikTok. Elsewhere in the city center, a Palestinian flag was burned. Social media users criticize the Swedish police for failing to prevent these protests.

Massive pro-Palestinian demonstrations with the participation of up to 20 thousand people, who will come from other parts of the country and from neighboring Denmark, are expected in Malmö during the Eurovision Song Contest. Swedish police are preparing for the possibility that “aggressive representatives of left-wing extremism” may be among the demonstrators.

Researchers at the Biology Centre, Czech Academy of Sciences, working with the University of Liverpool, have unveiled the genetic process that dictates the sex of Bicyclus anynana butterflies.

They have also determined that if butterflies carrying the same version of the sex-determining gene reproduce, the resulting embryos will not survive. This poses a significant threat in small butterfly populations with limited genetic diversity, where inbreeding is common.

This groundbreaking discovery marks the first instance of such a mechanism being identified in butterflies and intriguingly, it shares similarities with a comparable process found in honey bees. The findings have been published in the journal Science Advances.

The squinting bush brown Bicyclus anynana is indigenous to Africa.
