As some European politicians push for increased returns, aid organizations cite widespread destruction and instability as major obstacles.
The debate over the return of Syrian refugees from Europe to their homeland is intensifying, with some German politicians advocating for increased repatriation efforts. Though, aid organizations and experts caution that critically important challenges remain in Syria, hindering the safe and enduring return of refugees.
According to Middle East expert Naseef Naeem, “Refugees return from a camp in Lebanon to their homeland faster than from Germany, where their situation is better.”
Shehadeh anticipates that those without work in Germany, “or who live in areas where foreigners are not so popular” will consider returning. Though, he acknowledges significant obstacles in Syria, noting, “houses are destroyed, whole blocks of flats are missing. Especially in Aleppo or Homs.”
“The original reason for fleeing, the reign of terror of the Assad regime, has disappeared.”
Two leading CDU experts are advocating for more Syrian nationals to return to their homeland to participate in reconstruction efforts, while also cautioning against remaining in Germany solely for social benefits.Alexander Throm, interior policy spokesman for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, told BILD: “The original reason for fleeing, the reign of terror of the Assad regime, has disappeared.”
Throm added: “It is therefore to be expected that Syrian citizens will return to their homeland and participate in the reconstruction. This applies above all to those who have only been here for a short time or who have not yet been integrated after many years, especially working.”
