Feijóo Seeks Catalan Support for Sánchez No-Confidence Vote

“I lack votes for a motion with a single commitment: to call elections and for the Spaniards to decide. I lack votes from yours, in quotes, but I don’t have them.” This is how the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has expressed himself before the Catalan employers’ association Foment. That “theirs” which, according to Feijóo, belong to the businessmen, refers to Junts and ERC, in the words of the PP leader. Some and others already disdained this option last May, after the imprisonment of Santos Cerdán.

“I am convinced that in this room there are surely many people who have voted for Junts,” Feijóo said during an event in Barcelona organized by Foment and in which he was introduced by the former CiU deputy and today leader of the employers’ association, Josep Sánchez Llibre. “I don’t know if there are many or few who voted Esquerra,” Feijóo added, but he wanted to “speak very clearly” to some and others.

“I don’t lack the desire to present a motion of censure. I lack votes to present a motion of censure that has a single commitment, to call general elections and that all the citizens of Spain can decide which Government they want at the polls,” a statement he said just yesterday, when called the seventh street protest against Sánchez.

But the novelty is the direct and public appeal to the relations between Catalan businessmen and, especially, Junts. “What I’m missing are votes from yours, in quotes, but I don’t have them. “It’s a confirmation and it’s not a criticism, it’s a chronicle,” he concluded.

After Feijóo’s intervention, there was a question-and-answer session from the audience, but the broadcast was cut off. From the PP they assure that that part of the event was not open.

It is not the first time that Feijóo has made a direct appeal to Junts or ERC to seek their votes in a motion of censure against Sánchez. He did it, for example, this same month of May, after the imprisonment of Santos Cerdán. In January, Feijóo also expressly said that I wanted to negotiate with Junts. Something that he already did in 2023 to seek his investiture.

So, the Catalan independence movement of the left and the right rejected the idea. But some things have changed. Junts has staged its break with the Government, and this Thursday it overturned the budgetary path.

Yesterday, when he called for Sunday’s demonstration, Feijóo again rejected the motion of censure. But he added a little tag to keep in mind: “This is my position today”.
