Like a bolt from the blue, Fear Effect suddenly appeared on modern platforms without any prior warning—PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Steam and Nintendo Switch. This is a true cult classic that was originally released almost entirely 25 years ago and now it can be owned for less than $10.
What’s unusual about this version is that there is no official announcement at all. No one of the involved parties came out to promote the game—instead, they just threw it directly into our legs.
Still, nostalgic fans and curious newcomers now have the chance to experience the cartoon shadow adventure again. At the time, it was groundbreaking—especially because of its massive scale. Distributed on four CD-ROMs, stuffed with movie cutscenes, it was undeniable that it was cool at the time. Of course, there are many shortcomings in controls and gameplay, but who cares when you sit there, eyes wide open and fascinate? Fear Effect is, and is still a true cult classic.
Have you played Fear Effect before? What are your best memories of this game?
