FBI Informants Present at January 6th, But No Undercover Agents Partook in Riot

A new report from the Justice Department’s Office of the Inspector General sheds light on the FBI’s role in the lead-up to the January 6th Capitol riot, confirming the presence of a number of informants in Washington D.C. on that day, but dispelling the conspiracy theory that the FBI orchestrated the attack.

26 Informants Present, None Undercover

The report reveals that 26 "confidential human sources" (informants) were in Washington D.C. on January 6th. Three were tasked with gathering information on potential domestic terrorism threats, one of whom entered the Capitol building. The remaining 23 informants were not directly directed to be in the area and attended the rallies independently.

Importantly, the report emphasizes that none of the informants were full-time undercover agents. These individuals are defined as "those believed to be providing useful and credible information to the FBI" who require confidential handling.

No FBI Involvement in Violent Activity

The Justice Department’s investigation found that while four informants entered the Capitol and another 13 entered the restricted perimeter, none of them were charged with trespassing. The report explicitly states that none of the FBI’s confidential sources participated in the violent aspects of the riot.

Missed Intelligence Opportunity

While the report acknowledges that the FBI identified a potential for violence on January 6th, it criticizes the agency for failing to adequately utilize its field offices to gather more intelligence. This omission, the report argues, could have potentially provided valuable information to law enforcement ahead of the riot.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings and Debate

Despite the report’s findings, the January 6th Capitol riot remains a subject of intense scrutiny and debate. Hundreds have been charged with crimes related to the attack, a number that continues to grow. Former President Donald Trump, who issued a recent statement that he intends to pardon "most" of the rioters if he returns to office, remains a central figure in the controversy.

The report’s findings provide a valuable window into the FBI’s role on January 6th, but the ongoing legal proceedings and the continued political debate ensure that the events of that day will remain in the public eye for years to come.
