James Comey, former FBI director, could soon face criminal charges for lies under oath, according to several American media.
Sources close to the file have revealed to CNN that prosecutors from the Ministry of Justice plan to submit a request for charges to a large jury in the coming days.
The investigation, conducted by the office of the federal prosecutor of the district is of Virginia, concerns declarations that Mr. Comey would have made during his testimony to the congress on September 30, 2020.
Prosecutors seek to determine whether the ex-director of the FBI deliberately misleaded elected officials about his management of the Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Under the American criminal law, the authorities generally have a period of five years to initiate prosecution, which places investigators before an imminent deadline.
If the accusations are retained and validated by a large federal jury, this could become one of the most resounding charges of Donald Trump’s second term, according to the American media. Comey has long been a privileged target of the Republican President and his allies, who associate him with what they describe as “deep state” within the federal government.
To date, James Comey has not been accused of any crime. He maintains having said the truth during his testimony. His lawyer did not respond to requests for comments made by CNN.
