The tragedy occurred on Thursday at Kylies Beach in the national park Crowdy Bay w New South Wales. It was there, early in the morning, that a woman and a man – both around 20 years old – took a sea bath and became the victims of the attack.
Local authorities have not yet determined what species of shark is responsible for the incident, but it has been confirmed that the pair encountered with a “large” individual.

The injured person was transported in critical condition to the hospital in Newcastle. His current condition is unknown, but emergency services indicate that putting on a blindfold by a passer-by could have potentially saved his life.

The authorities decided about temporary closure both Kylies Beach and all nearby swimming areas. Initially, the restrictions will apply for the next 24 hours. – This is a terrible tragedy and we offer our deepest condolences to the families (…) For now, please stay out of the water at nearby beaches and follow the advice of lifeguards – said the director general of New South Wales Water Rescue, Steve Pearce.
The area is currently monitored by drones whose purpose is to raise alarms if sharks are spotted.
Five fatal shark attacks in Australia in 2025
Thursday’s tragedy is the fifth fatal shark attack this year. The previous one occurred in September near the beach Long Reefalso located in New South Wales. He died then experienced 57-year-old Australian surfermost likely attacked by a great white shark.

In total, there were 12 confirmed attacks in Australia in 2025. They are attributed to great white sharks, bull sharks and tiger sharks. The current year is considered as one of the most tragic in recent years. Last year, there were nine incidents of this type, but none of them resulted in death.
