Teen Book Brigade: Moving Upwards to a Brand New Space at Fairhope Public Library

FAIRHOPE, Ala. – The Fairhope Public Library, situated at 501 Fairhope Avenue, is set to host an extraordinary event that promises to be both a community effort and a festive milestone. On Saturday, March 1st, local teens will embark on a unique mission to move over 4,000 books from the old teen area to a newly renovated Teen Space.

The Book It Brigade Unfolds

The initiative, dubbed the ‘Book It Brigade,’ will see teens forming a human chain, passing the books hand-to-hand through the library and up the stairs to the awaiting new space. This creative and engaging method not only ensures the smooth transition of books but also provides an exciting way for the young patrons to be directly involved in the library’s development.

Teen Librarian Allyson Russell is leading the charge. “We’ve been planning this move for months, and our kids are really enthusiastic about it. When one of our teen volunteers suggested we form a ‘Book It Brigade’ using a concept similar to a firefighters’ bucket brigade, the name stuck, and we’re thrilled with it!”

Community Support and Donations

The renovation of the Teen Space at Fairhope Public Library has been a long-planned project made possible by substantial community support and donations. Besides the primary goal of relocating the book collection, the renovation includes new areas for Technical Services, a Friends of the Fairhope Library workroom, and an updated MakerSpace.

This transformation signals a significant investment in creating tailored spaces for young patrons, ensuring they have the best possible environment for their educational and recreational needs.

A Space for Teens

The new Teen Space at the Fairhope Public Library offers a vibrant space designed specifically for teens aged 13 to 18. With amenities like computers, puzzles, blocks, and crafts, it aims to foster a love for learning and creativity among its youthful visitors.

“Since its inauguration, the Fairhope Public Library has repeatedly been recognized for its exceptional services to children and teens,” said Allyson Russell. “We recently received the Best of Baldwin’s Best Place for Kids in 2024 andBest Place for Kids on the Eastern Shore and Best Place for Kids to Have Fun in 2025. Our Teen Services program plays a vital role in these achievements.”

Volunteer Opportunities

The Teen Services Volunteer program at Fairhope Public Library is another highlight, offering community service hours to teens in various educational programs. Last year, the library facilitated over 1600 volunteer credit hours for more than 40 teen volunteers, making it a valuable resource for students seeking to build their resumes and network within the community.

“Our program supports teens’ academic and personal growth by providing real-world experience and opportunities for civic engagement,” added Russell.
