A documentary chronicling the journey of alt-rock band Failure,whose 1990s albums garnered a dedicated following and led to a reunion that has lasted a decade,is set to debut this month. Every Time You Lose Your Mind,directed by the band’s singer and multi-instrumentalist Ken Andrews,will be available on both Hulu and Disney+ starting June 27. The film’s release comes almost ten years after the project was initially announced.
Andrews stated, “Our fans have connected with the themes of depression and addiction in our music. The film crystallizes those connections and, ultimately, communicates hope. We’re a band that faced a specific set of challenges and somehow managed to survive and thrive. It’s a story about resilience, finding ways to cope, and not giving up.”
Failure was formed in 1990 by Andrews and guitarist Greg Edwards. the band’s debut album, Comfort, produced by Steve Albini, was released in 1991. Joined by drummer Kellii Scott, the band released two more critically acclaimed albums, 1994’s Magnified and the 1996 space rock album Fantastic Planet, before disbanding in the late 1990s.
After the split, Edwards went on to form Autolux, while Andrews transitioned into music production.Though,the band’s cult following,which included support from Hayley Williams,ultimately led to Failure’s reunion in 2014. Since then, the band has remained active, releasing three additional studio albums over the past decade.
Every Time You Lose Your mind includes interviews with collaborators such as the late Steve Albini, Tool’s Maynard James Keenan, and Butch Vig, as well as fans like Jason Schwartzmann, David Dastmalchian, and Hayley Williams. williams recently performed Failure songs with Andrews at a Los Angeles wildfires benefit.
Along with streaming on Hulu and Disney+, Every Time You Lose Your Mind will premiere on the big screen at Los Angeles’ Harmony Gold Theater on June 26. The screening will also feature a rare acoustic performance by Failure. The band is also scheduled to perform at louisville’s Louder Than Life and Sacramento’s Aftershock Festivals later in the year.
