It’s important to note that memorialization does not grant access to conversations or other private profile information. The account remains as it was, frozen in time as a digital memorial.
Pages managed solely by an account that has been memorialized will be removed from Facebook, highlighting the importance of having multiple administrators for business or community pages.
Legacy Contacts: Appointed Digital Caretakers
Facebook allows users to designate a “legacy contact” – someone chosen before their death to manage their memorialized account. This individual has a limited series of responsibilities, including:

Though, a legacy contact cannot access messages, add or remove friends, or log into the account. Their role is purely to maintain the memorial aspect of the profile.

The option to memorialization is complete account elimination. This permanently removes the profile and all associated data from Facebook. A legacy contact can request deletion, or family members can do so if no legacy contact was designated.

Users over 18 can proactively manage their digital afterlife by designating a legacy contact. Here’s how to do it on the desktop version of Facebook:
- Click on your profile photo in the top right corner.
- Select “Settings & Privacy,” then “Settings.”

- Enter the name of your chosen contact and click “Add.”
The chosen legacy contacts will receive a notification informing them of their selection. You can change or remove your legacy contact at any time.
