Alberta Prepares for Frosty Weeks Ahead
Nearly the entire province of Alberta is set to experience a significant drop in temperatures, according to the latest warning from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).
Extreme Cold Warning Issued
ECCC issued an extreme cold warning early Sunday morning, predicting windchill values as low as -40 to -45 degrees Celsius. These frigid conditions are expected to persist through mid-week.
Coldest Days Ahead for Calgary
Meteorologist Eric Van Lochem from ECCC advised that the city of Calgary will experience the coldest days on Sunday and Monday. However, he offered a silver lining, explaining that temperatures will start to moderate sharply towards the end of the week.
Precautions for the Frosty Nights
Van Lochem emphasized that nighttime and early mornings will be the coldest parts of the day. Temperatures are expected to be slightly milder during daylight hours. Nonetheless, he advised remaining cautious and protective 24/7.
“Frostbite can develop rapidly on exposed skin, even when the sun is out,” he warned. “It’s crucial to stay indoors if possible, plug in your vehicles, and bundle up before venturing outside. Bring your pets indoors as well.”
Homeless Shelters Offering Support
Sandra Clarkson, president and CEO of the Calgary Drop-In Centre, reported that her organization shelters between 800 and 900 individuals each night. This number has increased by approximately 10% compared to the previous year.
“We have the capacity to accommodate everyone during extreme weather,” Clarkson assured. “If people need a place to stay, we will provide it, working with our partnerships to ensure everyone receives the support they need.”
Volunteers and donations are constantly needed at the centre. Clarkson expressed a need for meal service assistance and requested donations of winter clothing.
Chinook Contrast: Mild to Freezing
The sudden plunge in temperatures comes after a period of mild conditions caused by chinooks in December and January. These warm spells are now giving way to extreme cold, underscoring the unpredictable nature of Alberta’s weather.
High-Risk Groups during Extreme Cold
Extreme cold poses particular dangers to certain groups, including young children, older adults, people with chronic health conditions, those working or exercising outdoors, and individuals without proper shelter. Environment Canada has underlined the importance of being vigilant to protect these vulnerable populations.
Conclusion: Stay Safe and Informed
As Winter sets in, it is essential to remain informed and prepared. Stay tuned to local weather updates and follow safety guidelines provided by authorities to ensure your safety and that of your loved ones.
“We are ready to assist anyone in need,” Clarkson stated. “Please do not hesitate to reach out for help during these challenging times.”
