The Express-Tram 17 is scheduled to drive from Leimental to Basel from Leimental via Margarethenstich. On Monday, the governments of both Basel, together with the two transport companies BLT and BVB as well as with the ACS automobile club, have a new infotram.

Tram line 17 is to be accelerated in the front Leimental and upgraded to an S-Tram. The idea is that the tram between Ettingen and Binningen only holds once per town. Thanks to a future margarethen connection, the tram should take a shortcut to Basel SBB station, then continue to drive to Baden train station via Wettstein Bridge and thus replace part of BVB line 1.

With the S-Tram, an “unnecessary round of additional rounds” fell through the city, the Basel-based traffic director Isaac Reber (Greens) said in front of the media. The passengers could save around 12 minutes of travel time.

From Tuesday, the infotram will inform passengers on the BLT lines 10 and 17 about this project. Brochures as well as QR codes can be found there for explanatory videos.

Both Basel start new attempt for rejected tram connection

In September 2017, the voting foil of the Canton of Basel-Landschaft rejected the construction of the Margarethenstich tram connection between Binningen and Basel with almost 57 percent. The two Basel want to take a new attempt for this abbreviation. According to the territorial principle, Basel-Stadt should cover the largest part, while the Basel area with the double-track expansion Spiesshöfli created a template for the Express tram.

The Basel government will present the Grand Council a corresponding advice. In the event of a referendum, in contrast to 2017, the voting population of Basel-Stadt will have the last word this time. As part of the agglomeration program, the federal government will participate in the agglomeration program if the construction work has started by the end of 2027.

The project is part of the ÖV strategy Tram network expansion 2030, which is to relieve Basel city center from rail traffic. The Grand Council approved an issue for planning this package in June.

The S-Tram 17 also receives shooting aid from the automotive side. With the Expresstram, the traffic jam situation on the Leimental street can be defused, said Daniel Seiler, managing director of the ACS of both Basel.
