59-year-old Ewa was selling bagels near one of the market squares in Krakow. At the square, the woman’s husband, Mr. Janusz, traded clothing. January 12, 2024 just before 15 Mrs. Ewa gave him the core and an empty stroller after the bagels. She intended to go home. Mr. Janusz later claimed that he sensed alcohol from his wife, and the woman was to speak somewhat vague.
He returned home after 16, but his wife was not yet. He only reached her at around 17.40 and he heard that she was traveling by bus, but he did not know which one. She got out of him, but she has no idea where. For this she claimed that she had broken her leg.
The woman’s husband immediately called the emergency number 112. He said that his wife could be around the street in January in Krakow, and her relationship shows that he sees a large tree. It was the only reference point. He added that Mrs. Ewa suffers from diabetes and thus may have disturbances in consciousness. The situation complicated even more, because the woman should have been at 17 accept insulin.
“She spoke chaotically, inconsistent, indistinctly”

Mr. Janusz, sons of Ewa and policemen joined the woman by phone. “However, the contact was significantly difficult from the very beginning, because she spoke chaotically, incorrectly, indistinctly, did not answer the questions, hung up and did not receive some of the connections” – later presented the course of events, the District Prosecutor’s Office in Krakow.
The woman spoke on the phone, among others, that at a distance of about 800-1000 meters he sees two large chimneys with blinking red lights and that the nearest buildings are about 100 meters from her.
Initially, two officers were directed to the street. The search was also conducted, among others around the place of residence of a woman and in the area of Wadowa, including in arable fields. Police dogs did not take a clue. The areas near bus stops were checked, which was usually used by Ewa.
The areas of the location of the missing phone indicated. The data obtained in this way, however, was not precise. In the evening, Ewa’s phone logged in to various relay stations in the area of several poviats.
Monitoring of two bus lines was checked – 110 and 160. No result.
The policemen were accompanied by Mr. Janusz, who passed the information received from his wife. During the search, the police asked him to limit him to limit the phone with his wife. They were afraid that the woman would discharge the phone, which would make the action even more difficult.
During one of the conversations, Ewa mentioned that she was seeing a stadium. The missing husband estimated that he could be a Grębiałowianki stadium. One of the policemen launched the sirens of the police car and asked the woman to listen to them. When she confirmed that she was hearing a sound signal, nearby fields began to be searched. Soon, Mrs. Ewa added that she sees a police patrol who is moving near “Orlik” on ul. Darwin. To verify this information and determine the direction, the police car passed two meters forward and backward. Unfortunately, this test did not bring results.
The woman was also supposed to see the drone in the sky, which – as it turned out later – was not possible. The drone used to search was then a few kilometers away.
Ok time. One at night one of her sons talked to a woman. She repeated that she was lying in the snow with a broken leg, that she saw a drone and saw a flashing chimney in the distance.
Searching for Mrs. Ewa from Krakow. Tragic news
The search continued the next day. At 7.30 Deputy Municipal Commander announced the Alarm about the crypeting “Amber”, after which all available officers were to appear in the unit.
The city guard gave policemen recordings from surveillance cameras. On the day of disappearance, Mrs. Ewa registered the camera at the Kocmyrzowie roundabout. The woman crossed the pedestrian crossing, most likely towards the stop. However, the camera did not capture the moment when Ewa would get into any bus.
It was only that day before noon that one sons were to convey to the police that Mrs. Ewa is suffering not only to diabetes, but also to brain cancer. The woman probably learned about it a year earlier and therefore more and more often reached for alcohol. The son admitted that his mother happened in such a state of getting on the bus, get out in an unknown place, and then he went for her. This information was later confirmed by other sons.
On the second day of searching, it also turned out that the day before Mrs. Ewa near the headquarters of one of the companies in Kocmyrzów (about 10 kilometers from the marketplace in Krakow) was to be seen by a friend. The woman informed the police about it when in the morning she read information about her disappearance on the internet. Therefore, the search was focused on that area.
Before 14 One of the officers found Mrs. Ewa’s body in the cultivated field near Kocmyrzów, about 300 meters from the nearest buildings at Wąwozowa Street. The temperature at that time was about -1 degree Celsius. There was snow in the field.
The last hours of Mrs. Ewa’s life
“Death occurred in the mechanism of acute circulatory failure in a person with chronic multi -governmental spontaneous lesions, and an important factor was the low ambient temperature – cooling” – we read in the document provided to us by the District Prosecutor’s Office. No alcohol was found in the blood of a woman, while in the liquid of the eyeball – below 0.2 percent. Ewa had no broken leg. She died at night or early in the morning. She was buried at the Grębałów cemetery in Nowa Huta.
It was finally established that on January 12, Mrs. Ewa got on the bus line 212 at the Kocmyrzów roundabout and got off at the Prusy School stop. From there, she walked towards arable fields in Kocmyrzów. On the recordings received later from the monitoring cameras, it was obvious that the woman was going smoothly, no one accompanied her. It was also confirmed that the woman suffered from diabetes, which in the states of lowering or increasing blood glucose may result in confusion.
“All these services did not give her a chance”
The prosecutor’s office summed up that a total of over 350 policemen and over 40 firefighters took part in the search at various stages. Four tracking dogs were used, two drones were also used.
With a slightly different version of events, Mr. Janusz insisted, who – also in media statements – accused the police that she led the search ineptly. He even claimed that the officers ignored the information he passed and did not find his wife, although at some point they were to be about 150 meters from a woman who was still living at the time. He maintained that the police mainly sat in police cars and did not deal with the search for Mrs. Ewa.
– All these services did not give her a chance. She spoke on the phone. She begged, she asked: “Why don’t you want to save me, I will freeze here.” I feel sorry for them, she died and they couldn’t locate her phone. They were hanging around. We pay taxes in this country and what do we have? – he said in January last year in an interview with “Fakt”.
Prosecutor’s office: The case was treated priority
After these opinions of her husband, the prosecutor’s office – in addition to the analysis of the circumstances of the disappearance and death of a woman – also examined how the search was conducted.
The investigation was discontinued in June this year, nearly a year and a half since Ewa’s death. The conclusions of the analysis were described on 44 pages of the decision to discontinue the investigation we reached. Some information is included in the closed part, in connection with the operational activities of provincial command officers in Krakow, Kielce and Katowice.
“The documentation collected in the case indicates that during the search for Ewa P. a significant number of activities were undertaken, in which a significant amount of various police and non-tax and non-tax funds (including police officers, the State Fire Service, TSO, search and rescue groups), according to the possibilities and the arrangements made. From the beginning, the case was treated. level I, in connection with the obtained information about the state of the missing health, and the officers acted under the pressure of time, “assessed the District Prosecutor’s Office in Krakow.
“Search activities were undertaken according to their knowledge of their knowledge, including information obtained from Janusz P. and the missing person herself.” “Undoubtedly, the state of search was influenced by the state of health, including possible disorders of consciousness – periods of confusion – in the missing, perhaps strengthened by the consumption of alcohol,” said the prosecutor’s office.
“It cannot be said that if Janusz P. was looking for Ewa P. on his own, he would be able to find her” – we read further in the documents of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Krakow. “After all, as follows from his report on the disappearance to number 112, initially he sought her unsuccessfully. In addition, her sons were unsuccessfully sought. (…) Ultimately, her corpse was found at a considerable distance from her place of residence and away from the usual routes of her return home” – summarized.
According to Gazeta.pl, after the prosecutor’s office discontinued the investigation, the court’s complaint was made on the part of Ewa’s family. However, the court did not come to the conclusion that the prosecutor’s office incorrectly analyzed the case and rejected the complaint.
On January 17, 2024, i.e. a few days after Ewa’s body was found, the statement was issued by the Municipal Police Headquarters in Krakow, noting that a total of over 400 people participated in the search activities. “In a situation where human life is at risk, policemen make every effort and use all available means to find a living person. Search activities were carried out on a very wide scale, both in terms of the use of strength and means” – emphasized.
What to do if you get lost?
“In cases of disappearance, this time plays the most important role, so if you suspect that a loved one could disappear, do not hesitate to report the disappearance in the nearest police unit. What is important, you do not have to wait for 48 hours to pass” – the Masovian police advises on your pages.
“When reporting to the command, remember to take with you the current photo of the missing person if possible. When accepting the notification, the policeman will ask a lot of questions to learn as many facts as possible” – indicate the officers.
