A few days ago we showed you images of a controversial nativity scene that had been put on display in a church in Evanston, now the same church has changed one of the figures for a memorial in honor of the victims who have been affected by immigration operations.
It is the Lake Street church in Evanston and in recent days it has attracted a lot of attention by creating a political stance through the manger, in which the baby Jesus is shown with his hands tied, Mother Mary with a gas mask and Roman soldiers also masked with the acronym “ICE” on vests.
But now the different thing is that where the figure of Saint Joseph was, there is now a monument to the people affected by the immigration operations.
According to the Rev. Michael Woolf, the church’s pastor, apparent vandalism and heavy snowfall damaged the manger. They indicate that bad weather damaged the figure of Saint Joseph, preventing it from standing correctly.
He also claimed to be sure that someone had removed the plastic zip ties from the hands of the Baby Jesus and added that the gas masks had disappeared.
The church decided to replace the figure of Saint Joseph with a memorial to what they say were victims of federal immigration agents.
“I like it, but I’m sure a lot of people don’t like it because mixing religion and politics, and people who love Christmas probably don’t want it to become a negative thing…I just happen to be not a Christian, so it doesn’t affect me,” said Evanston resident Mindy Beaulieux.
This same afternoon at 6:30 this church will have a vigil to pray for the people who have been affected by immigration operations.
