Concerns are rising about Russia’s military capabilities as Europe increases its own arms production.According to the German weekly “Der Spiegel,” Russia allocates one third of its reinforcement budget, which is a serious threat to Europe. The European Union has initiated an arms program valued at 800 mld euro, but production is struggling to keep pace with current demands.
Reports from the Kiloose Institute of World Economy and Think Tank bruegel suggest that Europe needs to considerably ramp up its arms manufacturing. Analysts point to a lack of collaboration and research, potentially leading to technological delays and high costs for military equipment.
Despite the increase in ammunition and howitzers, Europe still has problems with the production of tanks and maneuvering missiles. Experts emphasize the importance of increased investment in research and development, particularly in drone technology and autonomous units, which are vital for modern warfare.
Tank Production Woes
Despite the increase in ammunition and howitzers, Europe still has problems with the production of tanks and maneuvering missiles.
The T-14 Armata tank, unveiled in 2015, was intended to be a revolutionary addition to the Russian army. However, its production has been plagued with issues. By 2020, only a few dozen units had been manufactured due to problems with drive systems and electronics, compounded by Western sanctions hindering the project’s development.
Russia currently produces mainly T-90M tanks, which are modernized versions of older designs. While these tanks are considered perilous and effective, their numbers are limited. the annual production of new tanks does not exceed 120 pieces, and most are modernized older models. Losses in Ukraine are already about 4.3 thousand cars.
The Russian arms industry faces significant hurdles despite its efforts to maintain production amidst sanctions. While new projects, including another revolutionary tank, are in the planning stages, their future remains uncertain.
Ultimately,Russia’s arms industry is constrained by financial and technological limitations, casting doubt on its long-term prospects.
