Experts pointed out that the increasing frequency and intensity of heat waves is due to climate change, which increases the risks to the most vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and children.

Spain

In Spain, June recorded the highest average temperature since the start of the data registration, with the average temperature reached 23.6 degrees Celsius, bypassing the previous records of 2017.

Barcelona also announced that June 2025 was the hottest in more than 100 years, as the Observatory was Fabra, a temperature of 26 degrees Celsius, and reached the highest daily temperature of 37.9 degrees.

Portugal

In Portugal, record temperatures of 46.6 ° C on Sunday in the Mora area east of Lisbon, according to the National Meteorological Authority.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Air Force indicated that 37 percent of the meteorological stations recorded temperatures in excess of 40 degrees Celsius.

Italy

The Italian Ministry of Health announced the maximum alert in 21 out of 27 cities under surveillance, including Rome, Milan and Naples, and areas such as Tuscany witnessed an increase of 20 percent in cases of hospital entry due to high temperatures.

The residents advised not to leave between 11 am and 6 pm.

Mediterranean Sea

In the Mediterranean Sea, the highest superficial heat was registered during the month of June ever with an average of 26.01 degrees Celsius, an estimated height of three degrees above the seasonal average.

The researcher at the Meteorological Studies Center through the satellite, Tebu Guento, stressed that this unprecedented heat negatively affects the marine ecosystem, pointing to frequent free waves that lead to collective deaths of marine creatures.

The oceans play an important role in organizing climate by absorbing 90 percent of the extra heat resulting from human activities.

The researcher pointed out that the current weather conditions make “the Mediterranean to bear the burden of the heat, with high temperatures, a little wind and incendiary sunlight.”

“Given the week we will witness, unfortunately, the temperatures will not decrease,” he added.

France

In France, the French Electricity Company closed the Golfash Nuclear Energy Station to avoid the high temperature of the Jarun River, which the station uses for cooling, amid the continuation of the hot wave of 40 degrees Celsius.

It is expected that the hot wave in France, in which the temperature reaches 40 degrees Celsius, will continue until the middle of this week.

Large forest fires erupted in the south of the country, where camps were evacuated and parts of highways were closed, and in the small municipality of Bezanit alone, more than 150 firefighters participated in the fight against fire.
