EU-US Deal: European Parliament Rejects Agreement

by Archynetys World Desk

The European Parliament decided to suspend the ratification process of the trade agreement concluded last year between the European Union and the United States. There is currently no majority in the European Parliament that would allow the agreement to proceed.

The vote in the European Parliament’s international trade committee was supposed to take place at the end of January, but – according to PAP information – it was suspended for political reasons.

So far, the largest faction in the EP, the European People’s Party, has supported continuing ratification. The committee vote was planned for January 27. However, according to a source in the European Parliament, the group changed its position.

According to PAP, two other key political groups – Socialists and Democrats and Renew Europe – are also in favor of suspending the ratification process. Without the support of these three factions, the agreement has no chance of gaining a majority in the European Parliament.

Representatives of the left also confirm their cautious stance towards the trade agreement with the US. “We must act now: suspend negotiations on the EU-US trade agreement (…). The EU will not succumb to intimidation,” wrote S&D leader Iratxe Garcia Perez on X.

According to PAP information, a meeting of political groups is planned on Wednesday in Strasbourg, during which MEPs will discuss the future of the agreement. For now, however, the ratification of the EU-US trade agreement remains suspended, and the lack of political consensus in the EP blocks further work.
