During the ongoing peace talks, the EU’s support for Ukraine remains unwavering, European Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa said after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Zelenskyy described the joint procedure with EU representatives and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte as coordinated and constructive, Reuters and DPA reported.
“The goal is a strong Ukraine, both on the battlefield and at the negotiating table,” both EU representatives said in a joint statement on the X Network. They again emphasized the importance of the independence of the attacked country and long-term security guarantees, which von der Leyen and Costa said were the main topics of the talks.
The Ukrainian president said on X that he had spoken with representatives of the EU and NATO about ongoing diplomatic negotiations. “We discussed in detail our cooperation with American partners in efforts to achieve peace, ensure security guarantees and strengthen our resilience. We also talked about the PURL program and possible loans. Our positions agree on all issues,” Zelenskyy added.
Earlier on Monday, Zelensky met in London with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Subsequently, according to Reuters, he said that Ukraine and Europe would like to complete their draft peace plan by Tuesday so that they can hand it over to the United States. He also reiterated that Ukraine cannot give up its territory to Russia, but that the US is looking for a compromise.
