Professional training, qualified work and European competitiveness on the agenda of the “Education” Council
The Council held an exchange of views on the role of vocational education and training (VET) in European competitiveness and resilience, with a view to addressing labor shortages and better matching skills to labor market needs.
Today’s debate highlighted a strong common commitment to strengthening vocational education and training as the foundation of Europe’s competitiveness. There is an urgent need to address skills shortages and align education with labor market needs if Europe is to remain resilient in the face of green and digital transitions.
Ministers considered how to better align VET programs with labor market needs while providing inclusive, quality education and training for all VET learners.
They also discussed ways to increase the attractiveness of VET programs and improve the gender balance, particularly with regard to programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
