EU Defense fund Applications Due This November
European Union member states have until November to apply for a share of the €150 billion common fund earmarked for defense contracts, according to European Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius.
The fund, formally known as Security Action for Europe (SAFE), aims to facilitate joint weapons purchases among EU members, wiht potential participation from non-EU countries like the United Kingdom under specific conditions.
Kubilius, speaking before the European Association of Aerospace and Defense Industries, indicated that initial expressions of interest are expected in July, with final applications due in November.
According to the approved SAFE agreement, the European Commission will make its final decisions within two months of receiving the applications.
Timelines and Potential Hurdles
If all goes according to plan, the funds could be disbursed to participating countries as early as autumn or winter, marking an unusually swift turnaround for a european defense program.
That means that money would reach countries interested in autumn or winter, a record term for a European defense industry program.
The European Commission initially proposed the loan program in March.
However, the timeline could be affected by threats from the European Parliament to challenge the Council’s decision to exclude the Eurocamara from the program negotiations.
