Ethan Katzberg Hurls World-Leading Hammer Throw in Nairobi

The Canadian Olympic champion continues his winning streak with a dominant performance at the Kip Keino Classic.


Ethan Katzberg of Canada is maintaining his momentum following his Olympic hammer throw victory last year.The athlete from Nanaimo,B.C., achieved a world-leading distance of 82.73 metres at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi, Kenya, securing an easy win in the men’s hammer throw event on Saturday.

Katzberg’s impressive throw surpassed the second-place finisher, Matija Greguric of Croatia, by more than six metres (76.68m).

Katzberg Dominates in Kenya

“Kenya feels like a second home. I started off my career here and that is why I love coming back plus I also keep posting good results here,” Katzberg said.

He added,”I did not expect to set a world lead here but I love how my season is shaping. Last year, I threw my personal best (in Kenya) and won gold at the Olympics.”

This victory marks Katzberg’s third consecutive win this year. while the distance was shy of his personal best of 84.38m, set at the previous year’s Kip Keino meet, it underscores his consistent performance.The 23-year-old previously threw 84.12m to win Olympic gold in Paris and 81.25m to secure the world championships gold in 2023. Katzberg and swimmer Summer mcintosh were Canada’s flag-bearers at the closing ceremony in Paris.

Camryn Rogers Secures Women’s Hammer Throw Victory

Canada’s Camryn Rogers completed a sweep for the nation by winning the women’s hammer throw event on Saturday. The reigning Olympic gold medallist achieved a throw of 77.93 metres, just under a meter short of her personal best.

The 2025 track and field world championships are scheduled for Sept. 13-21 in Tokyo.
