Forced to leave the small and big screens in 2025, the actor announced that he was suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Charcot disease, a devastating illness which finally took him away on February 19, 2026.

Action film, romantic comedy, musical, drama: after becoming known for small recurring roles in a handful of television series, including “Charmed”, his career exploded upon his entry into season 2 of “Grey’s Anatomy” in 2006.

His role, which was only supposed to be temporary, had such a positive reaction from viewers that he ended up playing the role until the start of season 9. More recently, between 2014 and 2018, he headlined the series “The Last Ship”.

But he didn’t shine only on television. Here are five roles that made him shine on the big screen:

1- X-Men : L’Engagement ultime (2006)

The same year as his first appearance on Grey’s Anatomy, Eric Dane landed the role of superhero Jamie Madrox, nicknamed “Many Man” for his ability to split himself, in the original X-Men trilogy.

The third film alone grossed more than $460 million, in addition to being one of Marvel’s most iconic films.

2- Marley and Me (2008)

Who hasn’t already shed a tear while watching the comedy-drama Marley and Me? In this American film, based on the autobiography of journalist and writer John Grogan, we can see Eric Dane in the role of Sebastian, close to the family, alongside Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson.

“Sebastian leads a seemingly ideal single life. He is always happy to listen [son ami] John and to give him advice, as long as a beautiful woman or a potential conquest does not distract them,” the actor said about his role during an interview in 2008.

3- Valentine’s Day (2010)

In 2010, the actor reunited with his Grey’s Anatomy co-star Patrick Dempsey in one of the most memorable cast films, including Jessica Alba, Bradley Cooper, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway, Ashton Kutcher, Queen Latifah, Taylor Lautner, Emma Roberts, Julia Roberts and even Taylor Swift.

In this romantic comedy where several narrative threads intertwine, Eric Dane plays the role of Sean Jackson, a professional American football player, who does not dare publicly reveal his homosexuality, to the great dismay of his lover, played by Bradley Cooper.

4- Burlesque (2010)

The same year, Eric Dane appeared in the musical comedy Burlesque, alongside Christina Aguilera, in the role of Marcus Gerber, a wealthy businessman who plans to raze a burlesque club, owned by Tess Scali, played by Cher, to build luxury condos there.

Singer Christina Aguilera also paid tribute to him on Friday by sharing excerpts from the film on her Instagram page, under the caption “Rest in eternal peace, Eric Dane”.

5- Bad Boys : Ride or Die (2024)

Among Eric Dane’s latest films, Bad Boys: Ride or Die (or Bad Boys: À la vie, à la mort, au Québec) is surely the most notable, while the actor was able to lend the line to Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Vanessa Hudgens and Alexander Ludwig in this third installment of the successful Bad Boys franchise.
