ISTANBUL – Turkish president RECEP TAYYIP ERDOGAN has reiterated his call for both Ukraine and Russia to return to the negotiating table, stressing that there is no choice to diplomacy in resolving the conflict. Speaking at a press conference, ERDOGAN highlighted Turkey’s ongoing efforts to facilitate dialogue between the two nations.
“We believe that a fair and lasting peace can only be achieved through negotiation and mutual understanding,” ERDOGAN stated. “Turkey is ready to provide all necessary support to bring the parties together.”
ERDOGAN’s appeal comes amid escalating tensions in the region, wiht both sides engaged in intense military operations. The Turkish leader has consistently maintained a neutral stance, seeking to balance relations with both Ukraine and Russia while advocating for de-escalation.
Turkey’s Role as a Mediator
“we believe that a fair and lasting peace can only be achieved through negotiation and mutual understanding.”
Turkey has previously hosted peace talks between Ukrainian and Russian delegations in the early stages of the conflict. While those talks did not lead to a breakthrough, they established a channel for dialogue and demonstrated Turkey’s potential as a mediator.
Analysts suggest that Turkey’s unique geopolitical position, its strong ties with both countries, and its commitment to regional stability make it a credible and valuable partner in the search for peace. However, the current conditions on the ground, characterized by deep mistrust and entrenched positions, present significant challenges to any mediation effort.
International Reactions
ERDOGAN’s call for dialogue has been met with mixed reactions from the international community. Some countries have welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that it could pave the way for a ceasefire and a political settlement.Others remain skeptical, pointing to Russia’s continued military actions and its unwillingness to compromise.
The United States and European Union have reaffirmed their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while also emphasizing the importance of finding a diplomatic solution to the crisis. Though, they have not yet indicated whether they are willing to engage directly with Russia in negotiations.
