Bugonia is officially set to make a streaming home for itself on one of the biggest platforms of all time. The announcement comes just ahead of the Oscars, which are slated to air on Mar. 15.

Fans have little more than a month left to wait before Bugonia makes its way to Netflix as its streaming home. Currently, Bugonia is slated to be available for streaming on Netflix beginning Apr. 26.

What Happens in Bugonia?

Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos from a screenplay by Will Tracy, the sci-fi comedy is based on Jang Joon-hwan’s 2003 film Save the Green Planet!. Bugonia stars Jesse Plemons as Teddy Gatza conspiracy theory-obsessed beekeeper who convinces his autistic cousin Don (portrayed by Aidan Delbis) to help him kidnap pharmaceutical CEO Michelle Fuller (portrayed by Emma Stone). Convinced that Michelle is a malevolent alien looking to reign over Earth, Teddy takes it upon himself to torture and interrogate her in order to uncover the truth.

Alongside Stone, Plemons, and Delbis, Bugonia features appearances by Stavros Halkias as Deputy Sheriff Casey Boyd and Alicia Silverstone as Teddy’s mother, Sandy Gatz. Over the course of the film, tensions between its decidedly tight cast reach unbearable heights, all while unsettling truths come to light, reframing everything that happened previously.

Upon its theatrical release in October, Bugonia proved to be an overwhelming critical successwith the film currently boasting an 87% “Certified Fresh” rating via review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, as averaged across more than 330 verified critical reviews. For comparison, Bugonia also holds an 84% audience-generated “Popcornmeter” approval rating.

While Bugonia garnered widespread acclaim and dozens of major industry award nominations, including a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awardsand another nod for Stone, that success didn’t quite translate to theaters. Over the course of its run at the box office, Bugonia only managed to gross $43.3 million, all against a budget of well over $45 million.
