Senio, Lamone, Montone: the torrents that have flooded several times in recent years, creating extensive damage in the Ravenna plain, become scary again on Christmas Day.
Evacuations began in Castel Bolognese, Cotignola in Bagnacavallo and other areas that are now used to dealing with the effects of the climate crisis.
The civil protection, already mobilized at the highest level given the red alert day, has opened the centers to welcome people forced to leave their homes: many Municipalities have ordered complete evacuation for those who live within 300 meters of the streams, while they have asked those who live less than a kilometer to go up to the higher floors.
Some rivers have already exceeded the maximum alert threshold, but, at the moment, no flooding has been recorded. However, it is not excluded that in some situations it will be decided to open gaps in the embankments for controlled flooding in open countryside areas to help the water flow away. The peak flood is expected in the late evening. Help could come from the weather: after the heavy rains of the last few hours, the precipitation has in fact eased, an element that has led the civil protection to downgrade the alert from red to orange for tomorrow. However, it rained more than expected, especially on the hills. For this reason, flood peaks will be more challenging than initially assumed.
However, it was a Christmas of anxiety and worry for many families who are periodically forced to deal with flooding rivers.
The Civil Protection map
The Department of Civil Protection foresees an orange alert for hydraulic risk in Emilia Romagna for December 26th, in particular in the Bologna plain. Yellow alert on the Romagna coast, the Modena plain, the Romagna hills. Yellow alert for storm risk and hydrogeological risk also in Abruzzo, Puglia, Sardinia, Sicily.
Florence Metrocity: widespread rain and light snowfall in Romagna Tuscany
The Civil Protection department of the metropolitan city of Florence reports that the disturbance affecting the area has brought widespread rain, which has turned into light snowfall at altitudes close to 1,000 metres, particularly in the areas of Tuscan Romagna.
In Marradi, 77.4 mm of rain was recorded in the last 24 hours. Local critical issues occurred, such as stagnation, water runoff onto roads and small landslides. Snowplowing vehicles from the metropolitan city operated to ensure that the relevant roads were passable. In the next few hours the phenomena will end.
