Electric Cars: Best Highway Range – Argus Findings

by Archynetys Economy Desk

L’real range of an electric car it is a much debated topic. The car manufacturers obviously provide data according to the cycle WLTP but in thereal use things can be very different. In particular, there is a lot of discussion about the actual mileage of battery-powered cars motorwaymaintaining a speed of 130 km/h. Thanks to the new batteries and the improved efficiency of the powertrains, with modern BEVs it is not a problem to travel on the motorway at code speed even for long distances. Where are we really at? The French colleagues at L’Argus have been carrying out a series of autonomy tests for some time, the results of which continue to be updated. Perhaps the most interesting one concerns driving on the motorway. To find out the real mileage on the motorway, L’Argus has already tested over 80 models and selected those with a real autonomy of more than 300 km.

Why exactly 300 km? This limit was chosen because it allows only one intermediate recharge in the case of important journeys with a total distance of around 500 km.

THE HIGHWAY AUTONOMY TEST

The French colleagues carry out these tests using a 118 km motorway route, maintaining a speed limit of 130 km/h. Only one person on board, with a cabin temperature between 20 to 23 degrees depending on the season. The tests took place with external temperatures ranging from 10 to 30 degrees depending on the period. The results? The top of the ranking sees the presence of Premium models equipped with large capacity batteries. In first place, for example, we find the Mercedes EQS 450+ (107.8 kWh) with 495 km (80-10% 347 km). Second place for the Mercedes CLA 250+ (85 kWh) with 454 km (80-10% 318 km). Third step of the podium for Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer Pro S (86 kWh) con 407 km (80-10% 285 km).

To be noted position number 11 for the Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD (78.8 kWh) with 369 km (80-10% 258 km). Overall autonomy aside, the even more interesting figure is the one calculated on range 80-10% which is closest to common use which therefore calculates the real autonomy with a use of 70% of the battery charge. When traveling, you always leave a little margin to be able to have some residual autonomy in case of problems with the charging stations. In this case, however, we note that only two cars exceeded 300 km of actual travel.

THE RANKING

Let’s see the latest updated ranking on the autonomy test on the motorway based on the findings carried out by L’Argus.
