Under the pretext of a bad signal from the electronic payment terminal on the terrace, the bar manager took the opportunity to take the nonagenarian’s bank card inside the establishment and make him pay for the usual consumption but also other amounts.

The owner of a bar in Granada (Andalusia, southern Spain) was sentenced to one year and four months in prison for defrauding a 94-year-old customer, who came almost every day to have breakfast in the establishment. According to 3/24the manager allegedly took more than 22,000 euros from him in two years.

Aged 57, the boss, under the pretext of a bad signal from the electronic payment terminal on the terrace, took the opportunity to take the bank card of the nonagenarian inside the café. He not only charged the usual consumption, but also added other amounts.

Up to 450 euros for breakfast

The victim, out of trust in the owner of his usual bar and/or because of his great age, did not notice the abnormally high amounts: certain breakfasts could cost him up to 450 euros.

According to investigators, between June 2023 and June 2025, the fraudster gradually increased the amounts misappropriated, going from a few dozen euros to much larger sums.

In total, the police estimate the total damage at more than 22,000 euros, comparing the excessive payments to the real price of the old man’s daily consumption.
