Federation and OjoFilms Announce “El Abuso”: A Historical Drama Series
Renowned production companies Federation and OjoFilms have collaborated to bring a powerful historical drama to screens around the world. Their upcoming limited series, “El Abuso,” is set to premiere as an eight-episode production based on the true events of the 1971 Tupamaros jailbreak in Uruguay.
The Making of “El Abuso”
Directed by two accomplished filmmakers, Cesar Charlone and Fernando Meirelles, the series will delve into the dramatic escape of 101 political prisoners from the infamous Punta Carretas prison. Among those who broke free was Pepe Mujica, who eventually became the President of Uruguay.
“At a time when the world was deeply divided, this jailbreak symbolized freedom for an entire region,”
More than just an escape story, “El Abuso” also explores the kidnapping and assassination of CIA operative Dan Mitrione, a pivotal event that highlighted the brutal tactics of Operation Condor during the Cold War.
Cast and Crew
Leading the cast is notable actor Enzo Vogricinc, known for his role in the Platino Award-winning series “Society of the Snow.” The series is adapted by Mariana Santangelo, who previously crafted the screenplay for “En La Puta Vida.” Executive producers for the project include Juan Solá, Mariana Santangelo, and Damian L. Cattini.

Themes and Significance
With a focus on blending local authenticity with global appeal, “El Abuso” aims to highlight the human impact of political conflict. The series, according to its producers, is not just a retelling of history but a reflection on timely and universal issues. “This project is a passion for us, rooted in years of research and enriched by firsthand accounts from those involved,” said Mariana Santangelo of OjoFilms.
“We are deeply honored to tell this story, not only because it recounts one of the most extraordinary jailbreaks in history but also because it sheds light on a rarely explored chapter of the Cold War in South America.”
Uruguay’s Emergence as a Production Hub
The production of “El Abuso” also underscores Uruguay’s growing reputation as a hub for international film and television productions. Recent successes like Netflix’s “Senna” and J.A. Bayona’s critically acclaimed “The Society of the Snow” have attracted attention to the country’s filmmaking capabilities.
“While Uruguay has become an important shooting location for international productions, we believe it’s equally vital to tell our own stories. ‘El Abuso’ is a prime example of how we can bring international audiences and production partners together to share the richness of our history with the world. At Alterna Media, we are deeply committed to developing local stories that resonate globally.”
With “El Abuso,” Uruguay continues to demonstrate its appeal as a location for high-quality productions, offering competitive incentives, state-of-the-art facilities, and skilled professionals.
Legacy of Tupamaros and Cold War strife
The Tupamaros’ escape and its aftermath resonate with contemporary audiences. As a landmark event in the fight against oppression during a tumultuous time in history, “El Abuso” serves to remind viewers of the lasting impact of political actions and the enduring struggle for freedom.
With a strong cast, talented directors, and a powerful storyline, “El Abuso” is poised to captivate viewers worldwide, blending historical drama with thought-provoking themes. This collaboration between Federation and OjoFilms marks a significant step in the global storytelling landscape, highlighting the rich cultural heritage and significant historical events of Uruguay.
