Eishockey.net: Low Return on Effort | Hockey Analysis

by Archynetys News Desk

EHC Winterthur ended the 2025 calendar year with a 2:5 defeat against EHC Basel. Despite a committed and attractive performance over long stretches, the Winterthur team were once again denied the reward they deserved – a game that is emblematic of the last few weeks.

In front of 722 spectators in Deutweg, Winterthur showed a very defiant and intense performance in the first third. The lions acted with commitment, looked for a duel and pleased the audience with a lot of effort. No goals were scored during this phase, but the performance was encouraging.

Even in the middle third, Winterthur remained active and invested heavily. The equalizer by David Madsen in the power play was the well-deserved reward for the effort. But after that the difference in efficiency became noticeable once again: Basel took advantage of defensive inattention and scored simple goals with little effort. Within a few minutes, Winterthur fell significantly behind and thus deprived itself of possible points.

In the final section, the Lions tried everything again, but here too the familiar picture emerged: a lot of effort, a lot of running – but too little return. Marc Diethelm made sure the result was cosmetic, but this didn’t change the guests’ deserved victory.

So it remains to be said: Winterthur wasn’t the worse team for long stretches, but they made significantly more effort for significantly fewer goals. The performance at the end of 2025 was once again decent, even good in some cases – but once again no points resulted.

Now the focus turns to the decisive game next Saturday against the GCK Lions, a direct competitor on the line. There it is important to finally earn the reward – with the same intensity, but with more consistency.
