In a landmark study published in Nature, experts have hailed the use of semaglutide — the active ingredient in Ozempic — to be a groundbreaking treatment for knee osteoarthritis. In clinical trials conducted across 11 countries, participants experienced significant improvements in their condition.

The deputy director of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, Dr. Bob Carter, praised the results. “The magnitude of the improvement is of a scope we haven’t seen before with a drug,” he told the New York Times. “They had an almost 50 percent reduction in their knee pain. That’s huge.”

Danish rheumatologist and lead trial director Henning Bliddal echoed these sentiments. “By the end of the trial, many patients experienced such an improvement that they were no longer eligible for the study,” He told Nature. “They got a therapy that was so effective that they more or less were treated out of the study.”

While the paper’s authors acknowledge that weight loss contributed to the reduction in knee pain, they also noted that semaglutide’s known anti-inflammatory effects may have played a significant role.

In the study, 400 patients across five continents were given either semaglutide or a placebo. Patients taking semaglutide showed more weight loss and a dramatic reduction in knee pain scores—an average drop of 42 points compared to the placebo group’s 28 points. They also reported increased ease in performing everyday activities.
